PEOPLE in Shaw have once again enjoyed a real life Christmas nativity thanks to local stable owner Helen Roberts and the reception pupils from Aloeric School in Melksham. The Key Stage One pupils from Aloeric made their way in their nativity costumes to Mrs Roberts’ stables in Bath Road, Shaw, to take part in an authentic recreation of the stable scene, including live donkeys, and to sing carols. Mrs Roberts said: “This is the fourth or fifth year we have taken part in this. The idea came from wanting to give something back to the community. I am a member of the local church and the idea just came to me one day. Everyone who comes along parks opposite and follows the star we have on top of the stables, just like the wise men and shepherds did in the nativity. I don’t actually own donkeys but I borrow a couple from someone I know.” Every year the nativity raises money for various charities, this year being in aid of Starlight Children’s Charity and the British Heart Foundation. “This year we raised £164.22 for the two charities. We chose Starlight this year because we always like to try and help children’s charities. We had quite a large crowd this year, we had parents, Shaw School, Rockey Nursery and quite a few others,” added Mrs Roberts. As well as giving the children a chance to meet the donkeys, Mrs Roberts and her family also ensured that the parents could have a treat. “We play traditional carols and my daughter and her partner provide mince pies and mulled wine for all of the adults. It is a real community event for everyone,” said Mrs Roberts.
